PASS IT ON: NIKOLIJA BARETIĆ

“Pass It On” is Lauba’s project, which gives young artists, students, the opportunity to exhibit their works in a gallery. It is a series of pop-up exhibitions that alternate, so that the artists whose exhibition is set up, choose the next author themselves, and after five held exhibitions, one artist is chosen by Lauba, and so on in a circle. Unlike last year’s “Pass It On” exhibitions, this year they are set up in the space in front of Lauba’s great hall. In this year’s cycle of the “Pass It On” platform, the first artist Marta Katavić nominated Marta Dijak, who nominated Karlo Fintić, who nominated Nikolija Baretić. At the opening, find out who Nikolija Baretić will nominate next.
With the exhibition “Polarities”, Nikolija Baretić presents large works on canvas and watercolors from the “Horizons” series. The themes of the works are personal turmoil and life choices, which are reflected in the selection of specific landscape motifs, from offshore and marine ones, to local scenes that surround the artist while she is at the Academy. At the center of her interests are different times of the day, as well as different atmospheres or weather conditions. The choice of landscapes signifies the transmission of feelings of nostalgia and awe towards different scenes: the sea’s infinity, peaceful views of sleeping cities and urban winter landscapes.
Nikolija Baretić was born in 1991 in Bjelovar. She completed her studies in Fashion Design at the Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb. She entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2019 and is currently a graduate in the class of Professor Matko Vekić, at the Department of Painting. She exhibited at several group exhibitions and as part of several competitions, and she had her first solo exhibition in 2024 in Zagreb’s Uža Gallery.
