Pass it On – Katarina Kocijan “It’s Tuesday again”
Katarina Kocijan was born in 1997 in Rijeka. She graduated from general high school in Mali Lošinj in 2016. She entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2018. She is currently in her 1st year of graduate studies at the painting department under the mentorship of Duje Jurić and co-mentorship of Siniša Reberski.
In 2022, she participated in several group exhibitions (6th Painting Biennale, ALU Perspektiva 2, 36 Mountains). In the same year, she participated in two film festivals with the film MIMEZIS/F12 (the 31st Days of Croatian Film and the 18th edition of the international experimental film festival 25FPS), and the film was broadcast on HRT3 television as a part of the Animatik show. In 2023, she exhibited at an independent exhibition in Duisburg, where she showed a collection of works along with a screening of the film of the same name.
The task for Pass it On is always the same:
Small hallway, with two black walls, a black floor, a black ceiling, three spotlights, and hooks on the wall.
Katarina Kocijan offers a solution as well as instructions for work:
Before we even start thinking about the procedure itself, it is important to keep the following in mind:
- Nothing is thrown away.
- If we don’t feel like cleaning brushes from turpentine, then we don’t paint.
- Report to the diary that we are still alive.
- Maintain philosophical and theoretical hygiene.
- Don’t be ashamed.
Each step is conditioned by the previous ones, so it is advisable to keep that in mind so that we can start playing in the playground we are building as soon as possible.
STEP 1
Notes about time and space can take all kinds of forms, but it is better not to step deep into the forest of possibilities, but to listen to what our material wants for itself.
STEP 2
Now we start with the construction, and here we could easily complicate our lives with estimates of our own precision or fickleness, so to avoid this nightmare, the smartest thing is to simply comment on the weather forecast or record only the bare truth: “It’s Tuesday again”.
Occasionally, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to show what we’ve been doing hiding in the studio, but each time there will be a new task.
